Speed Reading

by bassman 6 October 2010

How fast do you read? Being a notoriously slow reader myself I found this topic very interesting.  So I did a little research and it turns out that I am actually slightly above average, which I am still finding hard to believe.

First I took an online Speed Reading Test and figured out I read at a little more than 350 words per minute.  According to Ezine Articles250 words per minute is the average.  However, I find that I usually take much longer to read a book than others so I didn’t really understand how this could be true.  I did a little more research and found that there are a lot of factors that can affect how fast you actually read on a regular basis.   I believe my problem is distractions, I have a very busy schedule that typically keeps me thinking about multiple things all the time.  This can really hurt ones speed reading ambitions as it turns out.

Here are some tips on how to read faster - http://www.wikihow.com/Learn-Speed-Reading.  Right off the bat there are few I may try including the eye test.  I can’t remember the last time I had one.  I think I was 12, perhaps it is time.  Also, finding a place that is quiet and free of distraction should help me to enjoy my time reading more.  I look forward to trying these.  Let me know through Feedback if you have found anything that helps you.

by bassman 19 September 2010

Hey all, So in just a few short months we are being reported on by the big guys.  The Wall Street Journal called us a couple of weeks ago and asked us a few questions about what we were up to here at Alikewise.  They just came out with an article this past Friday.  Check it out:

Alikewise Around Town

by bassman 13 September 2010

We had a great time this weekend at joining the Lit Crawl event in New York City.  It was such a wonderful opportunity to meet many great authors and hear some of their new works.  One of our favorites was David Levithan who read from his newbook -- The Lover’s Dictionary.  We can’t wait to check out the rest of it when it is released early next year.

To everyone we met at the crawl and the next day at the Brooklyn Book Festival, we had a great time.  Stay in touch and we will be sure to do the same.

Take care,

Matt

We are happy to announce that Alikewise now supports book lovers in Germany. Willkommen!

(The Germans that I know are especially attractive and literate. Is this a terrible stereotype?)

By the way, a few German sites have been kind enough to write about us recently:
