“Kundera is clearly a very fine writer. I had never heard of him, saw this book at a dusty library sale and remembered the movie with Day-Lewis, opened it up and knew right away that I had been blessed again to find a book that would move me. Did he write in English? I don't remember. I'll Google it later. If not, then the translator was excellent, too, which is not an easy trick. It's odd sometimes what makes for a great book. Think about "The Shipping News." Except for the head in the suitcase, there's no real... physical action. But as with the Kundera book and others... if you listen closely... they're saying "This story meant something to me, and I hope it will for you as well." This is a book (a "file") they'll load on the ship, ten billion years distant, that flees our exploding sun.”
