“I like Card's style, and I read the rest of the series, and even though each book is still decent, each book gets progressively more dull as you go on.
The books move in two directions
Ender in Exile (direct sequel following Ender, but the most recently written)
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind
There's also a collection of short stories, but I forgot the title.
Bean, Peter and other members of Ender's geesh are on earth post-Bugger war in "Shadow" books:
Ender's Shadow (simultaneously as Ender's Game)
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant”

“The collection of short stories is called "A War of Gifts". A light read for Christmas time. Does not really add to the overall story.”

“As far as I'm concerned, Scott Card got to the second book in the series (Speaker for the Dead) before succumbing to pure douchebaggery. It was a good run while it lasted...”

“That sounds about right. But his other books are so bad, I have to wonder if Ender was even his story. I loved Ender's Game so much that I read about 10 of his non-Ender books, and they were all a terrible slog. Then of course there's his website, where he writes all sorts of unhinged things. A while back he wrote a rant in support of taking up arms to defend marriage should the government approve of gay marriage. I don't know how such dangerous idiocy could have authored Ender's Game. I really want to dislike the book, but I just can't.”

“I'm impressed that you were able to get past ten crappy books. I gave up after one. And I know that he's an epic twat now, though I think, if you read Ender's Game again, you can see the genesis of that tendency. it's a book which is ultimately about the triumph of fascism, and the success of the will of one over many.”

“Well, it was back in high school when my tastes were a bit wanting. Even the worst Orson Scott Card is better than Dean Koontz. Hell, a touch of cholera is better than Dean Koontz.”

“I have never read Dean Koontz. Hell, "Deen Koontz" even sounds like a strain of cholera. Or maybe an STD.”

“I think that core turmoil is key. I like how Card eventually goes to each of his strong characters from EG and later revisits their unique humanity(s). Do you remember how you found this book?”

“Love this book too I always loved that ender had the strength to deal with the unexpected funny how timing influences our perception as much as good writing can .”

“I agree. Good writing is something that can really touch and change someone and Ender's Game is such a book. Ender, himself, had this ability to adapt to any situation, which is one skill I wish I had.”

“ithink this and king's "the long walk" are the two most re-readable books I know. even with the ending in mind it still never fails to satisfy.”

“I've never read "the long walk." But I resisted reading "Ender's Game" for so long because I didn't think a book about space and fighting sounded at all engaging.”

“I tend to be luke-warm on that type as well, but Ender's Game is kind of like Johnny Cash or The Godfather: So good it transcends genre. Does that make sense?”

“i'd have to say Dune was my first obsession; however, i will reserve judgement until i have read this book. checking it out right now”

“Most books that are good do transcend genre. And there is no way to explain why they are good but to get someone to read them. I think I bought this book for presents half a dozen times, just in hopes that MAYBE someone will give it a chance. But I can't explain why it's good.”

nu_rabbit, a 28-year-old man in Evanston
“think that's true? i don't know, i think it's a special kind of Greatness that will get somebody to enjoy a book of a taste they don't normally like. in the way that 'Dune' is a great book, but 'Neuromancer' is a good book that somebody who doesn't dig sci-fi probably won't get or 'Pride and Prejudice' as Great while 'Sense and Sensibility' merely good. it's like fruit in beer.
Know what you mean in re trying to force good onto other people. Must have given 'Chronic City' to a dozen people for christmas in '09, don't think anybody read it.
Some times I think Kavalier and Clay was this fantastic piece of book, other times over-hyped and too formulated. Rarely do i oscillate that much when in judgement...”

“But isn't the best feeling when someone loves the same book you do? Because there is no real sense to it. And I know I'm supposed to put my "opinion" by the books I select, but my real opinion for most of them is just "I think this is really good but I am not sure why."”

“actually, all of my professional training is in saying Why things are good or bad :) a little less mystical, but i get a bit of thrill in digging into the mechanics of the writing and seeing how a book acheived something. just can't leave the curtain in front of the contraption!
most of my friends are engineers, so it's a lot of 'hey, you gotta read this, you gotta read this!' getting met with blank stares. alas alack!
you know who does ellude me though? Vonnegut. his novels have their own seperate branch.
also: couple JGBallard novels showed up in the mail. nothing so exciting as finding a new author to indulge in. having run out of lethem, this is very welcome. reading anything good these days?”

“A friend just gave me the Worm Ouroboros, which, like Ender's Game, I am hesitant about. But I'm going to give it a shot. I'm a lit teacher, so I feel like I should want to dissect a book into what makes it good, but my professional opinion is that probably a kid either likes a book or doesn't, and I won't really convince them otherwise. (Or more often the kid just doesn't read at all).”

nu_rabbit, a 28-year-old man in Evanston
“there's only so much grabbing of collar and shaking and yelling "you must like this book!" that can be effective, i hear you. sometimes a piece is Good, and sometimes it's the book for its season at the right time and place for the reader. i think Battle Royale was like that: a trashy vulgarity that was the kind of unpredictable, anti-convention that I needed.
i get frustrated enough trying to get my friends or family to pick up a good book, i couldn't even imagine if it were my professional responsibility to convince the unwilling to be eager about something I cared about. much respect. my students are all 2nd and 3rd year law school students, so if I just hint it'll look good on a resume they'll attack any task vigor.”

“The secret is to not actually try to MAKE anyone like reading. It doesn't work. I know I'm supposed to want to, and be a good, earnestly enthusiastic teacher. But they will either get into it or they won't. I never got "into" some stuff in school and it didn't mean I was a bad student. But it is fun to run into someone who wants a good book and reads what I suggest and likes it. But that's not teaching. That's just....finding the right book for the right person at the right moment, just like you said.”

“I couldn't have said it better myself. I always love to re-read Ender's Game, it reminds me just how much I love his character and how much emotion I can associate with a young child in a story.”

“Pretty much every time someone asks me to recommend sci-fi to them, this is the first thing I check to see if they've read :) It's just such a great story with such engaging writing, I think it helps people forget for a bit that they're reading science fiction, especially since it dates so well (few people realize that this book was written before video games or the internet existed... but included RTS space shooter simulators, fantasy RPGs, online chat forums and more almost to a T).
Have you read all the sequels? :)”

“What's your take on Speaker For the Dead-- does it fit what Card sets up for Ender in Ender's Game? Or does Ender Wiggin seem like an entirely separate character?”

“Outstanding! Do me a favor and read Ender in Exile before Speaker for the Dead? Card wrote the book a year or two a go, intending it as a bridge between Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. I'm curious to see whether it works well as a sequence on a first read.
will be interested in your thoughts.”

“Occupational hazard: I'm studying to be a librarian, so I wind up inundating people with book recommendations.
I'm really interested in you reading Ender in Exile, though, for comparison.
Ender's Shadow and follow-up books tracing Bean's storyline didn't grab me as intensely as the Ender-focused books, but if you do read those, report back, definitely.”
