“He's an amazing and "quiet" writer, eh? Such simplicity but really profound....”

“Agree about the love/hate thing - I have friends who think it was a waste of time to read. I enjoyed it but can't articulate why I think it's worthwhile... or maybe it's just that I know it's so subjective; I mean, some people just don't like stories where the main character is hard to like!
I read it because it was given to me as a birthday gift, but before that I'd heard Robert Adams give a lecture on this book (after the Booker, maybe?) and was very intrigued. Haven't read any other Coetzee. But at least I can pronounce his name! ;)”

“I haven't read "Disgrace," but I've read a lot of Coetzee. I think he has his finger on a pulse (have you read "Age of Iron?"; I'm not sure I admire him more than Breyten Breytenbach (another white South African writer). Have you ever read K. Sello Duiker? He's no longer alive; killed himself, but he blows my mind.”
