“This was on my son's reading list at high school and I read about half of it before giving up. Not only were the names too confusing but it was so dark and tragic. Not my cup of tea.”

“There's a reason it's on the reading list - it's considered a classic now. But I'm with you in the sense that I feel life is too short to spend reading stuff I don't like. Don't give up on African novels though. Despite the fact they are mostly in tragic mode (sometimes comi-tragic as with Achebe), you get a glimpse of the pre-colonical rhythm of life, which was not to our taste perhaps, but still very interesting.”

“After having Nigerians in class, I understood the wife beating and its total portrayal of women. The bigger picture is the inaccurate vision of tribal Africa portrayed by Conrad and others. Achebe does not say his ancestry is without warts; only that it is much more multi-faceted and rich than other authors have said it to be. And, understood is not a replaceable verb for accepted.”
