“Someone once wrote that this was the most painful example of a doomed love affair they had ever read. I am still moved by this work of Mr Greene and am glad to see it here.”

“I am so glad that I am a recovering Catholic! Yes, I was once in that camp, but I only read Greene's work after defecting. I think that sometimes he makes too much of the faith, but this book still moves me. It is probably one of the best novels about the conflict that can exist between faith and desire. A great choice, if I may say!”

“The Catholic concentration does get a little... tedious. I recently read The Heart of the Matter and really enjoyed that as well, but grew weary of the unmasked Catholic musings, because it seemed like if he just concentrated on the story and the characters, those concerns would come out naturally. But hell, he's Graham Greene, what do I know? He also wrote my all-time favorite movie, so he must be doing something right. Congratulations on your defection!”
