“Yes! This was the first of his I read - found it in the library when I lived in Japan (and all English books were more precious) which probably added to my appreciation for the book, since I lived in a bit of a state of alienation and discombobulation myself... very very disturbing, the balloon thing; i think it gave me nightmares. And the rest of the story holds up the disturbment. Still chills me to remember...
i did see the movie, last year - I guess it did a fair job of bringing the book to the screen, but I don't think it's really possible to convey such an internal story. And Rhys Ifans was great, but didn't match the guy in my head!”
