“You have not stated why you like The Shipping News. it is one of my favourites also...the one I recommended to my book club(we meet monthly.) What intrigues me is that the main character is so abused as a child that he does not expect to be well treated as an adult(hence is is a hellish relationship) but that he gradually heals...as does his new partner. Also, the search for his roots is transforming.”

““I loved that the main characters, who had been so badly hurt, gradually learned to trust each other. I loved the understanding the protagonist's search for family truth, regardless of how difficult it might be to deal with, is also a necessary part of the healing process. A deceptively simple story about betrayal and loss which illuminates , at the end, with the promise of hope for the future and love which overcomes evil.”

“Excellent choice. I've tried a few other books by this author and couldn't get too far into them, and can't explain why I liked this one so much. Except for the head in the suitcase, nothing really happens... externally. A very nice book, so well written... it doesn't jolt your soul to a new place but... perhaps slides it there gently.”
