“Hello,
Some of the nicest people I've ever met in my life are Canadians. I think there must be a strong sense of comraderie there. What do you think ? I admit, I attempted, "the Brothers Karamazov" and failed. I was so overwhelmed by the scope of it and the size! I am a very slow reader. Do you think C and P would peak my interest enough for me to press through ? Best, Carrie”

“Not too many people choose this book, but it floored me the first time I read it. He's so logical, our dear Rodion, and has it all figured out... Such a perfect idea, he's as wise and great as Napolean. So many people in so much need, so much good he could do with the old woman's money... She'll die soon anyway, and is mean and hateful... Why, it makes perfect sense... Nothing could be more rational... Our dear little Rodion with his family sacrificing themselves for him - How dare they! He can't allow it. He'll fix everything with a single stroke... But then, with very little evidence of God anywhere in the world... Well, you know how it goes for him. Too bad he wasn't an alcoholic with a sponsor to comment on his "big idea", just to see how it resonated in someone else's brain... This is one of the books that made me see Russians as people and not the enemy. I'm a tad older than you and remember the duck and cover drill, the threat of Russian bombers attacking my grade school in the hinterland... Elmira, actually... The Soviets might have feared our mastery of the fire engine and the fire hydrant... Sort of amusing now to see them in the NHL and winning Wimbledon, jetting around the world with their VISA cards... I'm not so quick anymore to be afraid of designated enemies.”
