If you were to write only one book over the entire course of your lifetime (like Lee), you could only hope to create something as touching and enduring as Mockingbird. The themes of community, acceptance and prejudice that run throughout the book are timeless, but Lee has woven them into something personal, something to which any reader can relate. As a child of a small southern town, I recognize themes and attitudes that are true to life. The bravery little Scout shows in standing out from the norms of the day inspired me, and I only hope I can be as distinct and original as she was.”
