“"Older people like reading negative news stories about their younger counterparts because it boosts their own self-esteem, according to a new study." - http://www.torontosun.com/life/2010/08/30/15188481.html”

“The NYT article was just your standard baby boomer cluelessness, complaints that our generation aren't as self-sufficient as they were in our day. It's the same pablum they trotted out about Gen X and doesn't take into consideration the economic climate or the effect of baby boomers who haven't retired yet cluttering the job market. A classic case, as one blogger put it, of being born on third and thinking you hit a triple.”

“Also - what was the NYT article about?”

“Absolutely. I loved the scene in the TV version where one of the Marines is sitting on a Humvee reading Noam Chomsky.
Fair enough on not watching TV, but you should give The Wire a go. I'm sure you've had your share of annoying Wire fans grabbing you and yelling about how it's BETTER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE HISTORY OF TV PUT TOGETHER, but the thing is they're actually right.”

“I keep meaning to watch the Wire, but I don't watch TV very often. One of the cool things about the book, for me, is seeing someone write about my generation like they're taking it seriously, instead of being all "these kids today", like that article in the NYT last month. For instance, the book points out that these soldiers grew up during the Clinton administration, when it was difficult to attach any kind of naive trust in a government or presidential office that was being ripped to shreds in the media every day. So the possibility that the government was deploying them to serve its own political agenda wasn't so much a bone of contention for them as a "yeah, and?" kind of thing.”

“Yeah, I liked that one too. Also thanks for putting the Anne Lamott book on your profile, I hadn't heard of her and she sounds like my kind of thing, I'll check her out.”
