“Never thought of it *quite* that way, but you've got an excellent point. Actually, in less creepy ways, aspects of Dune's framing and toolset *have* propagated out. Search online for variations on "by will alone I set my mind in motion" and the caffeine variants alone could fuel a dozen master's theses. Interestingly, from what I've seen, this has happened more within professionals within the military (e.g. intelligence units) than anywhere else.
I've long suspected that the almost freakishly effective self-hacking by various techies I've known owes no small amount to our early exposure to Dune and having sat there and thought, "Hmmm, I don't have to settle for the mind I've got now. I can, within limits, rewire my own brain. Well then; best get started."”
