Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of How...
by George Crile
“Messy awkward people doing messy, awkward things that most of us didn't pay anything like enough attention to at the time. And now our entire world is enmeshed in the turmoil set off by those few obscure would-be paladins.
I found this book very informative about policy in the region and that would have been enough. But it's also a compellingly evocative illustration of how multipliers work and how power and leverage may have very little indeed to do with what is in the spotlights relative to the things being dismissed as "parochial" and "exogenous" and "transitory" by most of the sententious authorities in their high seats.
Like a number of my other favorites, I would love to live in a world where this book was read, and read well, by all of our high school students and used by teachers and parents alike to teach how the world works and how it become how it is.
Hey, a guy's gotta dream.”
