The Blind Assassin: A Novel

by Margaret Atwood

This is the kind of book I appreciate on an intellectual level, but I just had a hard time investing in it. Maybe the characters seem too distant. Maybe it's a function of the role memory plays on this text. I really enjoyed the way the sci-fi/affair interludes are written. I think Atwood is a great writer, and if this is the figurehead of her oeuvre I would say it's about right. However, I liked some of her other novels more. Ian McEwan's Atonement is a good comparison to this structurally and in dealing with how memory affects narrative, but I would judge McEwan's work as a bit more successful. (8/10)
